ChatGPT Is Recommending Local Businesses in the Lehigh Valley — Is Yours One of Them?

Here's something most local business owners in the Lehigh Valley don't know yet.

Right now, someone in Allentown, Bethlehem, or Easton is opening ChatGPT and typing something like:

"What's the best urgent care clinic near me?" "Who does custom websites for small businesses in the Lehigh Valley?" "Recommend a good restaurant in Easton, PA."

And ChatGPT is answering them — directly, confidently, by name — recommending two or three specific businesses.

The question is: is yours one of them?

For most local businesses, the honest answer is no. And the gap is wider than you might think.

The Numbers That Should Get Your Attention

According to BrightLocal's 2026 survey, 45% of consumers now use an AI assistant to find a local service. That's up from just 6% a year ago — a more than sevenfold jump in twelve months.

At the same time, SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed over 350,000 business locations and found that ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of them when asked for a local option.

Put those two numbers together: nearly half of your potential customers are asking AI to recommend local businesses, and AI is only mentioning 1 out of every 83 businesses it could theoretically recommend.

If you're not in that 1.2%, you're invisible in those interactions — and you won't get a notification telling you so.

This Is Different From Google

When someone searches on Google, they see a list of ten results. Even if you're not #1, you might still get clicked. There's a page 2. There's a map pack with multiple pins. There are options.

When someone asks ChatGPT the same question, they get two or three business names — and a short explanation of why each one was recommended. That's it. There is no page 2. There is no "you came in 4th." Either your business is named, or it isn't.

As GMB Radar put it recently: ChatGPT behaves more like a decision assistant than a search engine. It doesn't present a broad list for you to browse — it narrows the field and recommends only the businesses that appear most reliable and relevant based on everything it knows.

This means a business can rank well on Google and still not be recommended by ChatGPT. In fact, research shows there's only a 45% overlap between businesses that rank in Google's local pack and businesses that appear in AI recommendations. More than half the companies winning on Google are completely absent from AI answers.

Why Most Local Businesses Are Invisible to AI

AI tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity build their picture of your business from multiple sources simultaneously: your website, your Google Business Profile, your reviews on Yelp and Facebook, your listings in local directories, and any mentions of your business name across the web.

When that picture is incomplete, inconsistent, or too vague to extract a clear answer from — AI moves on to the next business whose profile it can confidently summarize.

The most common reasons local businesses get skipped:

1. Inconsistent business information. If your name, address, or phone number appears differently across Google, Yelp, Facebook, and your website, AI treats that inconsistency as a trust problem. It's less likely to confidently recommend a business it can't verify.

2. Generic website copy. A page that says "we're passionate about helping our customers" gives AI nothing useful to work with. AI tools look for specific, direct answers to the questions customers actually ask: What exactly do you do? Who do you serve? Where are you located? What makes you different?

3. No structured data. Schema markup is code added to your website that tells AI exactly what your business is, what services you offer, and where you operate. Most local business websites have none of it — which means AI has to guess, and often guesses wrong or skips entirely.

4. Thin review presence. Reviews aren't just for converting customers anymore. A 2026 survey found that 72% of small business owners ranked customer reviews as a top factor for AI visibility. AI tools read reviews to understand what your business is actually known for and whether customers trust you.

5. Missing or outdated directory listings. Research shows that 60–70% of the local businesses ChatGPT recommends first are pulled from location data platforms like Foursquare, Apple Maps, and Yelp — not just Google. If your listings on those platforms are incomplete or outdated, you may be invisible in AI recommendations even if your Google profile is perfect.

The Good News: Small Businesses Have a Real Advantage Here

Here's what the research actually shows — and it's more encouraging than the headlines suggest.

AI tools don't automatically favor big brands. They favor businesses whose digital presence is clear, specific, and consistent. A small business that clearly explains exactly what it does, who it serves, and where it operates is often more useful to an AI system than a large company's vague corporate service page.

When someone asks ChatGPT "best web design agency for small businesses in the Lehigh Valley," they're not asking for the biggest agency. They're asking for the most relevant, most credible, most clearly described answer. A well-optimized small business can outrank a large competitor that hasn't paid attention to its AI search presence.

The businesses winning in AI search right now aren't the ones with the biggest budgets. They're the ones whose websites clearly and specifically communicate what they do — and whose information is consistent everywhere AI looks.

What AI-Ready Looks Like for a Lehigh Valley Business

If you want ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity to confidently recommend your business to local customers, here's what needs to be in place:

  • A fast, mobile-friendly website with clear, specific copy that directly answers the questions your customers ask

  • Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across your website, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, and Foursquare

  • Schema markup (structured data code) that tells AI exactly what your business is, what you offer, and where you serve

  • An active Google Business Profile with complete service descriptions, current hours, and recent photos

  • A steady stream of reviews across multiple platforms, not just Google

  • FAQ content on your website that mirrors the actual questions customers ask AI tools

None of this requires a massive budget. Most of it is about clarity and consistency — making sure that everywhere AI looks for information about your business, it finds the same clear, specific, verifiable answer.

Try It Right Now

Here's a quick test you can do in the next two minutes.

Open ChatGPT (or Gemini, or Perplexity) and type a search a real customer might use to find your business. For example:

  • "Best [your service] in Allentown PA"

  • "Who does [your service] near Bethlehem PA"

  • "Recommend a [your business type] in the Lehigh Valley"

See if your business comes up. See who does come up, and visit their websites to understand why AI is citing them instead of you.

If your business doesn't appear — that's not a permanent condition. It's a gap that can be fixed with the right technical and content strategy. But you need to know it exists first.
